Publishers and Agents seminar

Last Thursday I went to a Publishers and Agents seminar at the Queensland Writers Centre. It was good to actually see the people you are sending your manuscript submission to and to get an idea of what they want and don’t want to see. If it is your first draft or even your third it might need a bit more work before it is ready to submit.

Most of the information in the seminar I already knew, but there were a few interesting facts that I didn’t. Like the mythical book auctions that do happen, but only if the agent really believes your book is special. The reason for this is simple – the agent is staking their reputation on it. A book that sells at auction and then fails may make the publisher think twice about the next book that agent puts up for auction.
